If boldness is the secret to success, it has certainly worked for Morris.ĭetermined at first to be a Spanish dancer, he won a scholarship to work with Jose Greco even though his age was way below the audition limit.

Q - Is there anything you are afraid of doing?Ī - Not really. I just started making up dances, so I learned it from doing it.

(Pause.) That’s the way I started choreographing. Q - How was it that you were able to write that score?Ī - I wanted to, and I wasn’t scared to, I guess. A self-taught musician, Morris took his first piano lesson the next year. He scored it for a seven-piece chamber orchestra and mixed chorus. Although he had no formal musical education as a youth, by the age of 15 he had written the music for a piece he choreographed for a recital at the school of his Seattle dance teacher, Verla Flowers.
